Seasons of the Steel Year

Thirty years since the end of the Thousand Wars and the signing of the Vermilion Concorde with the Borinian Mandrarchy, the Northern Realm has been held in tense peace.  The Mandrarch Veiavux held the Templar forces of his theocracy at the foothills of the Painted Crags in the south; and at the crest of Bleaknest Peak, Crowsend of the Free East ignored requests for aid and alliance from both combatants until the conflict was over. Only then did envoys arrive in the courts of King Rimer and the Mandrarch with contracts of trade and marvelous contraptions of industry.

Since the ink on the Concorde dried, however, the peace began to erode.  The Concorde did not prohibit the Mandrarchy from maintaining a standing army on the island of Borin's Eye, much to the anger and dismay of several of King Rimer's generals.  Conflict with practictioners of the Borin Faith within the Northern Realm fueled anger and alienation.  A magical explosion in Redgate, one of the bastion cities of the Mandrarchy, shocked the nation when the Borinians accused Northern citizens of perpetrating the attack before the matter could be resolved. Influx of technology from Crowsend carried on the expanding rails of steam-engine trains widened the gap between the those with means and those without.  And to make matters worse, rumor through the streets was that King Rimer, the once great warrior that united the many villages and towns against the threat of invasion from the Painted Crags and ended the Thousand Wars, was growing increasingly ill and incapable of rule.

In this time of uncertainty, General Walder Stellan purchased the disused ruin of Spearpoint Fortress north east of the capital.  Using his funds and influence, he rebuilt the site from a ruin into a place of learning.  Spearpoint Military Academy opened its doors eight years ago, admitting students from all nations and background.  Despite only five graduating classes to its name, Spearpoint already has a reputation of turning out exceptional alumni that have made strides in the world.

It is thirty-ninth year since in the end of the Thousand Wars.  As the tenuous peace between the three nations continues to fray, Class Nine, the newest student arrivals for Spearpoint Military Academy, gathers at the stark stone fortress looking out onto the Middle Sea with their hopes, their ambitions, and their fears for the world in tow.
