The evening is calm and mild.  The homeless that are in the park are not numerous and peaceful.  The park itself is designed to fit along the river.  There are paths, a small ball field, and some stylized buildings.  The bamboo garden is making a 'russshhhing' noise in the slight breeze.  181th splits the park into a north and south.  The Santa Fe tracks split it into east and west.  These seem to have been accounted for in the design as you see a slight change depending on your location.

As you watch, you can see the signs of gang or drug activity.  You catch a quick meet-up over there.  There are a few small bags on the ground here.  There is some music that is coming from the lot by the pagoda field house that is loud, with a number of people around it that are rowdy.  It is an urban setting.

You don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Mindstrike sighs as she notices the activity. She looks to see if anything violent needs to be stopped as she listens to the scanner.

She otherwise stays out of sight.

You float lower and approach from the trees.  The group is a little large, a little rowdy and definitely not dispersing.  There are multiple cars, at least one radio on too loud with base kickers, and a lot of testosterone.  There is a older man that is the focus of the 10 or so teens attention.  "You cannot be here.  This is where we exercise.  The music is too loud.  The people are scared."

His plea is met with laughs.  There is a small number of Asian 'grandparents', dressed in sweatsuits and tees, in a group at the other end of the lot near the field house.  They are definitely not coming closer.

It is approximately 6:30.  The field house may be open, but you do not see anybody.

Seeing the potential powder keg before her, Mindstrike floats above and just behind the gentleman that is the focus of the group until she's only about ten feet above him before she asks at volume, "Bonjour. Who thinks they are in charge here?"

You get a start from the group of teens, the older gentleman (who edges away some) and even the group of exercisers across the way.  While the old people are frightened, the teens seem to over come more of their fear faster.  Of the teens, a boy in his late teens steps forward.

Looking up at you, "Da hell you want?  Don't you got some fire or something to be the hero at?  You don't scare me floating up there."

Mindstrike floats down and lands in front of the apparently leader and looks him in the eyes, "Is this better?"

She then says, "This is a public park, you don't own it. Please leave these people be and let them exercise."

As you challenge him, it demeanor does change.  He visibly swallows hard when you are in his face.  The older gentleman pulls back even further, but he still has not fled.  A few of the group have retreated to the safety of the doors of the center.

He holds up his hands, "We'll go.  No need for violence. Let's go...let them have their space."  He looks you up and down, before he starts to move for the car.  There is a little grumbling, but they all start to leave.

The look on the old man's face is a little shocked.

Once the kids are gone, Mindstrike turns to the older gentleman and smiles, "Tai chi I would guess?"

She then says, "I think I will stay until you are done unless some emergency comes up. Even then, I will come back to check up."

The older gentleman bows to you, "Yes, thank you."  He waves to those at the building and they hustle over to the green at the back of the baseball field.  Most keep a wide berth around you.

You hear clapping.  When you turn, there is a man in a yellow and black uniform, much like Bruce Lee.  His face is covered by a scarf.  As he he walks toward you, you note the 'hand print' on is left breast. "Nice job.  I bet they would pushed back against me more."  As he is noted, there is a few of the older crowd that notice.

They do Tai Chi in many of the parks in Chinatown and around Chicago.  You can go join for free.  If you're lucky, there are 'impromptu' performing arts festivals you can see (dancers, fire eaters, drum circles, etc.).  Not all over and very random....

"I'm not incognito.  I was hoping this may be a stronger sign than what I had warn before.  They recognize Lee even though he died long before they were born.  What are you doing here?  I don't see many of your kind watching for gangs."  His voice is calm and measured.

You walk around to be 'less in the open' behind the park's field house.  As he walks, he puts his hands behind his back and takes slow easy steps, always looking from side to side.  Looking west, you see the river and then on through Chicago.

"It seems that there is more people in need than help to be given.  Just this little thing here today makes these seniors feel more safe.  It is a simple thing to do, but not everybody can or have the care.  You?"

She then shrugs, "Sometimes it's even fun."

Mindstrike then takes out her phone, brings up the dating app, and messages Bo, Hey, it's Bonnie. How have you been?

Minstrike closes the screen and stashes the phone back in her boot pocket, "You might consider carrying a burner. They are much too useful for some things we can't do."

She then takes out a business card and pen and writes her burner number on the back of the card, "While you can contact me through my assistant and sister Hiromi with the number on the front, but the number on the back is where you can leave a message if I am unable to pick up. The backer for this team initiative is The Sentinel. He operated in Chicago in the 80s, and he thinks the city needs a team to deal with greater threats. I agree because it's always better to have a team for problems. Even smaller problems are easier with a little extra help."

She then extends her hand to him with the card between her index and middle fingers, "Would you be interested?"

He takes the card and looks at both sides.  He looks at the front and then looks at you.  "I had known the association after looking you up after the theft at the museum, but I guess this makes it seem more real."

He takes the card with some reverence and holds it in his palm when he puts his hands behind his back.  He smiles, "No pockets.  <pause> I had not thought about joining others.  It seemed that what I do helped many in little ways and that it was enough for me.  I admit I may not have the power you need.  I have my kung fu and some chi, but I cannot fly.  I cannot even lift more than a normal man."  As he talks, you walk slowly behind the building and find yourself on one of the many paths that crisscross the park.  There are smells of flowers in the air, the late sun lighting the trees and not much else.  On the path, the car noise and many of the sites of the city have fallen away.

Contribution is not a single aspect. It's multifaceted. You can learn from others and develop skills and talents. You can receive equipment that could help you and make you more effective. There are many advantages of working with others."

As they walk she says, "This reminds me of of Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. Serene."

He continues his slow walk, keeping his hands behind his back.  "You almost make it sound like you need a trainer?"  He laughs a little.

"I was born in Paris and raised in Paris and Tokyo. I am aware I have lived an extremely fortunate and privileged life, but I try to temper it. As for a trainer, it does become more difficult to find skilled trainers as you advance, but I'm not to that point yet."

He laughs at you comment on Diablo.  "I find that those who have a 'weapon' may use it to the exclusion of other tools; to their detriment.  But...that does get to one of my concerns.  Against one that flies, against on that is super fast...as Intercepter-X is...I'm not sure how useful I would be and that I would not be the one in need of help.  You cannot fight a fire with your fists."

"You have some points though.  There is always more strength in numbers.  If I may ask, what was your reason to join?"

As for why I accepted Sentinel's offer to join and help recruit, there will be another Red Monday event someday, and we need to prepare for it. Even without that motivation, people pooling their resources is just the smart thing to do."

When you mention Red Monday, he sighs and nods.  "I did not know any of them, but they seemed to be good people.  I've seen the video from that day.  It is sad.  And I'm sure the whole story of that day is uglier than we know. Did you know any of them?"

Resources include computer access to a great deal of law enforcement and government networks. A trailer has been set up in Downtown to meet and coordinate currently, but other facilities are in the works."

He looks off into the clouds and takes a deep breath.  "I'll have to think more on the subject.  It isn't that I doubt your sincerity, your hopes for this, but I'm still unsure of my place in it and then what would happen to the people here."  He waves with a hand back to the group of seniors practicing their Tai Chi.

He smiles.  "Daily.  Maybe not if it rains or snows, but I've seen them out there in the cold and wet.  Fewer, but still there.  It keeps them attached to the 'home country'.  I've not asked, but many of them are first generation here and speak limited English.  They all speak Mandarin.  Some Korean or Tibetan as well.  I know a few fled and a few migrated, but they don't always share those things openly."

Ghost Hand nods as you rise into the air.  The Tai Chi practitioners watch you leave, but do not stop what they are doing.

There is no 'meta-human' activity reported on the scanner.  There are calls for a party disturbance, shots fired on the east side, and reports of a few robberies (muggings) with one be in the West Loop.

You fly a lazy loop out and over the West Loop on the way home.  It is easy to find a few police cars and an ambulance, when you have height.  Listing in on the scanner you get that there was a robbery of a drug dealer (the dealer was the victim), and he was stabbed.

Your apartment is downtown in "The Loop" (the loop is defined by the loop created by the CTA tracks...they circle a large downtown area of high rises, some of the oldest and build after the fire with the new technology).  The West Loop is not far or out of the way by much.  The Loop will have the highest value in the downtown area.

I always love this building.  I had clients in this building a long time ago.  The Fisher - ornamental metal, dark woods, haircut, coffee and hats (yes, a hat shop) on the first floor.

Landing on the balcony, Rei enters the penthouse and heads for her bedroom. As she walks, she takes her burner phone from her boot before her outfit disappears and her business attire reappear. Once in her bedroom, the outfit is removed before a trip to the bathroom for a long hot shower.
She emerges from her bedroom in a robe and slippers with her hair wrapped in a towel to see if Hiromi is home.

On the burner, you have a message from Orwell that he has finished the map and the timeline done for the robbery, a timeline and map for all known robberies, and a timeline and location map for data points for Brikner up till his disappearance.

On the work phone (texts and email), 99% are the normal daily items; there is a project meeting tomorrow with the new musical director for Marketing, a few updates on projects, a request for a interview, and a few personnel items to process.  But, there is an unexpected email, but a Knight Wolf.

Rei acknowledges Orwell and notes she will be by tomorrow for an in person update and to get the information.

Rei goes through the work messages and emails and responds as needed. The interview request gets her attention.
When she sees the message from Knight Wolf, she uses the off book laptop to copy the message and put it on the burner. She then sets up an email account to specifically respond to it.

Knight Wolf:
Ms. Rousseau,

First off, let me introduce myself.  I am a somewhat recent, at least publicly, addition to the hero roster in this city.  There was some arrests I participated in, though I did not stick around to be recognized, this evening involving a ruined car and another with a holdup who went running as well as a mugging with additional criminal connections.  The police were informed anonymously of course.  I go by the handle of Knight Wolf.  Unlike yourself, I intend to keep my personal life secret and separate from my hero identity.

Regardless, I noted your conflict with the two thieves that were apprehended after the MSI theft.  I presume you will be digging into said theft.  I have, in my own investigation, come up with some interesting clues.  Perhaps it might be advantageous to compare notes.  I am heading to investigate some new developments presently.  If and when you are available and are interested in continuing this discussion, please contact me and I can provide a more secure method of communication.  I am headed to the harbor now to see what might be found there.

I am indeed investigating the attempted robbery, and I am making some progress.

As she does all this, she occasionally checks to see how Hiromi is coping with mother over whatever the conversation is about.

[OOC: As it's currently Friday evening, the meeting most likely won't be the next day on Saturday. It will be on Monday most likely, but I'm good with passing the weekend other than the exchange with Knight Wolf and a quick scene in person update with Orwell the next day along with alerting Sentinel about Knight Wolf's existence.

Hiromi lets you know that there is nothing new with mother.  She is only being a mother.  Although she was going to a ball at the Eiffel Tower.  It is a fundraiser for a hospital.

The interview is from Chicago Magazine.  They are interested in talking to you for a profile.  You and Hiromi are both requested, but your PR team thinks only one of you should do the profile and then we could do a second profile, with a different focus and message, in 10-12 months.

Rei decides to video call mother sometime Sunday if only to see how the fundraiser ball went.

She informs Hiromi about the interview and that she agrees the interview should be only one of them while volunteering to take the first and having it focus more on the company.

She then orders gyros and watches some shows to decompress before bed.

The next morning, she flies to Lower Wacker before getting down to street level to get to the trailer.

At the door she says, "Bonjour, Orwell. I have information."

When you enter, immediately multiple maps come to life on the large screens.  "Hello.  I have correlated all the locations that I have on these two maps.  Although there is nothing that correlates between the thefts and the locations for Mr. Brikner.  Although the Doctor thought it was interesting that Mr. Brikner was only in locations off the coast of the North See; never in Berlin for example.  I have put a time/order to both maps so you have an idea of what came first."  All of the locations on both maps are suddenly numbered, giving you some idea on what was when.

Brikner's last location (prior to the voyage that he never returned from was Harstad, Norway (large shipping/fishing town on the largest island).

"I don't know who this Knight Wolf is, but if he is investigating this, he is a potential team member and another point of view in the investigation. I will be meeting him in the coming week."

Rei then gets copies of the information on the flash drive before she pockets it.

She then asks, "Is there anything else, Orwell?"

1) The two new robberies were much like the others.  Taken items were various papers, a flag, a small statuette, and a full SS uniform.  Both robberies were from private collections and were in Europe.
2) One of the robberies was actually the second attempt at that location.  The first attempt was stopped by the security guard that stumbled upon quick hidden/stored equipment and called police.  The robbers were arrested and are serving time in jail.
3) Interpol has an open file on the European robberies, but it is not being worked actively (reason unknown).
4) The map of Mr. Brikner's locations is detailed with as much information that could be pulled from documents (a lot of inference from the documents themselves).  The map allows you to drill down for more information at a location.

After a call, she does confirm with you that the drugs take were a) common OTC items that you manufacture for resale by other firms and b) can be broken down to create methamphetamine.  The drugs are controlled for that reason throughout the manufacturing processes.  She does get one more piece of information after a second phone call; these drugs were packaged and ready for bulk shipment.

"I found this in the bottom of a desk set piece.  It is part of set.  We are missing one other piece.  A Nazi eagle with a similar base.  The piece was not in the stolen items.  It is in our inventory.  I don't know what this means.  The desk set was owned by a Nazi member by the name of Brikner.  The included pages are the details that we have the two pieces.  I didn't find anything in the piece we have here.

The included documents are from their inventory system.  It includes photos, measurements, descriptions and provenance of the items.  They came together along with a pen and pencil set, desk mat, and clock.  The desk clock does not have the same base and is described as 'dusty internally, but in good working order'.  All items were cleaned, but nothing is mentioned about a space inside the pieces.

Arriving at the trailer, it seems like it has the last few times you've stopped.  No cars around...no people around...but the whirl of a camera as you get close.  It focuses on you and makes no attempt to hide.  If you had to guess, there were at least 5 other cameras in the area.

When you move to the door, it is unlocked.  You are greeted by an upside down mushroom from ceiling.  It isn't large, but has manipulators (and a blade or two) and such at the ready.

This is a three story building.  Industrial in styling.

You cover the distance to the fire in just a minute or two.  Being able to go over some items and not have to deal with traffic is a real advantage.  There are multiple EMT, police and fire vehicles on the scene.  The crowd is being controlled.  The cars in the lot are being moved slowly; safety and access have to come first.  You see smoke coming out of a few windows and there is a fire on the roof.  The fire department have gone in the front on the ground floor.

There is a few people very surprised as you float down.  Then there is some confusion, on the part of a few, but recognition on the face of others.  "Ah...Captain?" says a firefighter, while tapping on a man in a white shirt and protective pants.  He is over a virtual map (a large screen rugged laptop), a few radios, and paper map of the block, all spayed out on the hood of a car.

"What!?"  He turns, looks at the firefighter, at you, and then seems to roll something around in his head.  Then he seems to strike upon an idea.  "How many people can you lift in flight?"

This would be a pre-cast concrete warehouse (very common around here). The roof is multiple layer metal-asphalt-sheeting. The heat is noticeable, but not terrible, but the smoke is concerning. Mindstrike backs up to take a breath and hold it before going back in to hack at the roof.

[OOC: Brick and cinder block is Body 8, and solid steel is Body 12, so I'd guess this would be somewhere around...9, maybe 10?

I put it at a 9.  You received no RAPs (you hit, but no column shifts and it was a NA).  I'm at work and don't have a table in front of me, but that is what I remember.  I figured you first attempt would reduce the resistance for the second roll.

While her telekinetic field slows the smoke affecting her, it does not stop it. The heat doesn't affect her so much, so she pulls back to get a breath and then dives back in to make the hole larger until she's radioed to stop.

The gravel that sits atop the roof is falling into the hole like rain.  The smoke and heat coming from the hole, when widened, increases.  You still do not see an flames.

The chef comes on the radio, "Mindstrike, where is my hole?  I'm seeing more smoke from the south-east corner.  That you?"

You hear an alter coming from inside the building. "IF ANYONE CAN HEAR ME, CALL OUT OR MAKE SOME NOISE.  HELP IS COMING."

She then asks, "Someone is in the building looking for survivors. Is that one of yours?"

It seems the more she tries to make the hole larger the more she finds things that cause her TK blades to glance off of.

"Good.  Make one more hole for me...move toward the center of the roof.  It doesn't have to be big.  I'll need to know how the flames are there as well.  We have men going up the other side of the building...hoping to get up and down for it spreads too far.  We'll be hitting you current location with water to cool the roof.  If you can hit the windows on that side when done on the roof, that will help.  We've hit the high windows with the hose, but not all of the windows have broken."  There is yelling in the background of the chief's radio.  The sires in the area have increase a lot since you arrived.

There is a large jagged hole in the roof.  The stone rain down inside.

The smoke, smell and flames are bad below.  The smoke blocks your vision for a moment.  Some of the flames jump toward the open air, but you are floating out of reach...but not for long.  Between the heat and smoke, you get light headed for a second, but recover quickly.

The wall is strong and you've picked a spot with more supports and a little interior piping...which all slows you down.  Avoiding the piping for the best result, it takes you a tries to get a good sized hole to fly through good room to spare.

The fire and heat is less here at the front than at the rear, but you see it spreading to this area.  The smoke is getting heavy with time.

Despite the fact Mindstrike couldn't see his face through the suit helmet, he quirked an eyebrow at her words.  It wasn't worth arguing the impossibility so he simply moved on and began to pass one of the unconscious people in his arms through the hole to her.  "Take however many you can carry.  I shall get the rest through and down," he stated even as he worked, trying to not bash the poor soul against the rough edges of the small opening to the flying heroine.

At the appointed hour, Knight Wolf stepped onto the roof and shimmered into view as he deactivated the cloaking mechanism.  He was a goodly distance away as to not cause alarm and his hands were raised, pointed slightly off to one side with palms up, in a placating kind of gesture.

"Good evening.  Thank you for coming.  I hope you are well and didn't breath in too much of the smoke," he said politely.

Police and first responders have access to support networks for the stress, and they receive training for the job. Most people that choose to do what we do have little to no training or any support network to fall back on. The best we can do is focus on the positive as much as we can and try to improve next time."

She then smiles, "We are still human though."

Then she says, "I asked for this meeting to pitch an offer from Sentinel. He thinks it's time for Chicago to have a super team again, and I agree as there is safety in numbers and multiple people with different skill and power sets. Knight Wolf will nod politely.  "I look forward to it," he remarked before turning to step off the closest edge.  Immediately after beginning to fall, he activates both the cloaking and flight systems.  With that, he heads off westward.  After monitoring signals and checking his sensors for about a half hour, Knight activates the teleporter and returns to his base.  After taking some time to go through the armor, clean up and fix up the various systems, do regular maintenance and such, he heads over to his computer terminals.  He had a bit of research to do...

"First, yes and that would be fish.  Not raw tho.  Second, I have an update on Mrs. Johnston.  She does have an ex-husband...he visited her this week.  I'm unsure if that is the first time or not.  I was able to dig a little and found that he is on her medical paper work, but not as POA.  Third, while you were out, Predator struck again. Not sure if it was timing or he was there for another reason, but he stopped a drive-by.  People saw the car coming at high speed and then saw the people with guns hanging out the windows.  He jumped on the hood and punched a few people.  He actually saved lives.  Oh!  Poke!  Shrimp!"

The team, even a contractor, is there in the room or virtual.  The technology, specifically the sound, is not working yet.  A technician is in the room and keeps trying to play a snip-it to get sound.  He has already apologized a few times.

Stacy, the admin assistant for the department (she was not in the last meeting), speaks up.  "Sorry about the sound.  It seems what was working yesterday is not working now after an afternoon meeting.  We have a set of extra speakers on the way if these will not start.  We have a sample of the music for the board presentation and the background music on the recruiting video for the France.  We have the upcoming share holder meeting into, the two commercials for Support-iva (the teen depression drug) and the upcoming idea for standardized music/video for our waiting public waiting areas.  We do not have video for the commercials or the board presentation, but we have story/art boards and a PowerPoint."

I started thinking on this and thought I would start this way.
- You note that the music tends to be classical guitar heavy in nature.
- The music does seem to be mixed and performed well.
- New things for Dichlan -
 
  • There is a small studio in this building (basement).
  • There is a small team of technicians that are used, but they are contracted and not full time.
  • The full time staff all have degrees (one PhD) and have a mix of musical specialties.
  • There is a open contract with Music Garage (larger, multi-room studio) for time yearly.

After listening, Rei says, "As much as I like guitar rock, Eddie Van Halen isn't appropriate for everything. Bring out the strings and woodwinds more for the French recruiting video. The shareholder meeting intro is fine as the guitar parts will ramp up emotion which will aid the attention spans, and we had a good quarter. The Support-iva could maybe have the guitar parts done with acoustic guitars instead of electric and get a better resonance. Do a second recording for both with acoustic guitars for a comparison. For the public waiting area music, it needs to be something that will fall into the background unless you're paying attention to it. That might be a good place for piano work."

She smiles, "There's a reason every lounge has a piano. If there isn't a singer, it tends to fall into the background, but the notes can help your mood."

[OOC: The teams will know that Rei is a classically trained in the piano, violin, guitar, koto, and as soprano singer. She is skilled in several other instruments but only at a hobby level.]

Cathrin listens to the various pieces of music presented and makes some notes for each.

"You did some great work there", Cathrin says to the team. "It clearly shows that everyone knows what he's doing and I'm really looking forward to working with you."

To Rei she says: "I agree that the set of instruments could be more varied, but if there's too big a change it may change the whole mood of the piece. Which isn't a bad thing, but should be taken into consideration. Are you aiming more for the lively mood or something a tad more somber?"

Cathrin nods to the part with the commercials for Support-iva.

"I think the public waiting area music could get some small variations of the main theme, so that someone listening to it more closely has something to discover, while it still fits into the background quite nicely. I've got a draft for a variation here, to play with." There is indeed a short notice on Cathrins pad showing some notes, quickly drawn.

"I really like the story board for the board presentation and commercials. That's something to work with."

To Rei she says: "There's a certain mood I want to capture with the music in this, especially for the commercials."

She follows up, "Everyone else here is aware of my own musical background. I am classically trained in piano, violin, guitar, and koto. I am a soprano singer, and have lent my voice to some projects. I realize I am likely not on par with your skill, but I also have to look at the combination of all the factors. The commercials and board presentation will likely take cues from the music as it will be finished before the shooting and editing for video."

I apologize.  'Rock guitar' and 'classical guitar' are different to me.  Classical guitar is sometimes Spanish guitar influenced...not electric...what you would hear on a classical music station.  But lets run with it...I like it.

[OOC: Your definitions of classic and rock guitar are spot on and how Rei defines them as well.
If you want some great guitar work, look up videos of Charo playing guitar in concert. She's an amazing guitarist, but most of the Western world knows her for her appearances on The Love Boat instead of her musical talent.
If you want some stupidly amazing guitar work you won't hear anywhere else, listen to any Jerry Reed song, particularly Guitar Man. Because of the way Reed tuned his guitar, Elvis couldn't get that part right when he covered Guitar Man. So they called Jerry Reed, who was fishing at the time, to come in and play guitar on it. Reed literally came in off the river and recorded the guitar part, and Elvis was over the moon with how it turned out. So when Elvis' "people" (more accurately, Tom Parker's vultures) told Reed he had to sign over the rights to the song (which was a requirement that caused several artists to flat out refuse, one of which was Dolly Parton over I Will Always Love You), Reed said no. Then he pointed to Elvis, who was celebrating the recording of Guitar Man, and said they now needed to tell him he couldn't release the song he just recorded. He wished them luck with that and went back to the river to fish. The song was released, and Jerry Reed is the only artist covered by Elvis that did not sign away his rights to do so.]

The tour is short because the studio isn't large and not that it isn't impressive.  It is only a two room study, but the control center is brand new and top notch.  The area was originally a built-in safe for a bank that had been in the building, but after the bank left, the safe had to be left as part of the building.  It is very quiet when the outer door is closed.  You cannot tell it was a safe after the remodel.  It has video and music editing ability.  The recording room had a few instruments on the walls (three guitars, a small Casio keyboard, and a flute).

They have used it for simple jingles and to mix video and music for commercials, promotional videos and press releases.

The report lists one meta taking in for 'property destruction' with other charges pending.  The person listed is 'Thunderhead' and they use the alias only for the report.  That is SOP until the court is involved.  The report also says a 'Jeremiah Red' was brought into custody for questioning in the incident.  I do not know if that is an alias or now.  The situation happened outside Red's Garage and the association between it and the person involved is inferred.

Thunderhead (a.k.a. Power Maiden, a.k.a. Maiden of Power, a.k.a. Power Burst...old alias being last)
Some web sites speculate that she can lift between 8-10 tons, jump the length of a football field, a sonic scream, and immunity to small arms fire.  There are pictures of her in a burgundy suite with black boots, gloves, tiara and small mask.  She was a minor villain and was associated with a few groups (all minor and all disbanded, arrested, or deceased).  She has not been active in three years or so and was out of jail.  Her last known location was Chicago.

This is public/Internet information.  I don't have a pic...I'm working on it...if CoH would cooperate.  Ideas on how to design a pic of this nature beyond CoH welcome....

Just to give an idea; black boots (tall), black gloves (finger tips to almost elbow), black belt (long loose end that hangs free), a small black mask, black suit bottom, glossy black ringlet upon her head (peaks in front).  Her hair was in a pony tail, tied with a black ribbon.  The body suit was burgundy, re-enforced at the elbows, knees, and thigh (think padded/plates, like football).  You do find a few pictures, but the suit changed little with time.  She has the build of a body builder.

If you want more, I'll need a roll for your research and more details.

He pours the tea and moves the cup toward you.  He smiles, looks around, and pulls into the table a little more to talk.  "Well, I have two items to talk about.  Big Brother has noticed somebody in CPD systems.  They are good, but a computer will always be better at finding data items that we can hide them.  It doesn't seem they are destroying information (he is not entirely sure what they have viewed) and has notice that I am one of the subjects.  I'm not saying it is you doing it, or your sister.  But since this is happening I did want to make sure you knew and since you should never fail to take advantage of a mishap, as the saying goes, I wanted to talk.  If you needed information, I want to offer it and be transparent."

He takes a sip of tea, "Always to hot. <sigh>  The English did figure it out...after they stole the tea in the first place.  But we've found something I need you to investigate.  It seems we've found a secret lair."

He takes a sip from his tea.  "The second subject that I wanted to discuss with you is that Armageddon will be in Chicago in three weeks.  It seems, as the Prime Minister, Leader of the Joint Forces, and de facto 'all around leader' of San Felipo, he is also their primary (only) ambassador.  He will be her visiting CB Mills Boilers.  It seems Mills has won a contract for boilers in San Felipo...water desalination.  It is good for CB Mills for sure.  His visit immediately means protests and security issues.  State Department...other Federal Agencies...I think this will be a mess."

"I'm not sure.  He has many enterprises and needing boilers is not a surprise for an island nation; I'm sure there are limits to some natural resources.  I know they have found bastnasite on one of the rocky out islands, but still...there are limits to what can be found on or under an island.  Although they do export high end sea salt.  I more wanted you to be aware as I have no real idea of his plans.  Megalomaniac with an armor and mercenaries...I can foresee disaster."  He takes a sip of his tea.  "I think it is a high probability that he will be monitored and there will be a force from the government we may never see...if things all go well.  It is a large contract and a boon for CB Mills.  I'm sure there will be other companies courting him while he is here as well.  I think it would be well for us to have people on alert for this, even if it is you use your contacts to just let them know."

The Uber for Stephanie and Zahrah pulls up before the metal and glass building just before Noon.  Stephanie is quiet and nervous as they enter the building and head to the security desk.  "Hello.  I'm Dr. Stephanie Brown and I'm here to see Rei Rousseau."  She hands over her license and waits.  She smiles at Zahrah.

Midday in the building is a mad place; people going to lunch, coming and going from meetings, the bank and the small store in the other end of the ground floor are busy, and the elevators are constantly moving.  The lobby is Art-Deco, as many of the buildings in Chicago.

At the head of the table Rei rises from her chair, "Bonjour, Dr. Brown...and your graduate student assistant?"

Before is a large sushi platter with various sushi and nigiri along with a pot. There are actual plates and nice but simple silverware as well as chopsticks. There is also a bottle of wine in an ice bucket and several wine glasses before her. On a smaller table in the corner are cups, a coffee pot, a smaller pot next to packaged tea bags, and a small refrigerator with bottle water and canned sodas.

Rei smiles, "Please, choose a drink and have a seat. We have a Josh Cellars Sauvignon Blanc if you would like. We have a variety of sushi and nigiri and Japanese clear broth soup."

Other than determining what Stephanie had wanted for refreshments after Rei made the offer, Zahrah had not acknowledged Rei since arriving. But now that Stephanie had let the metaphorical djinn from the bottle, Zahrah felt she could discuss the literal one.

Looking somewhat disappointedly at Rei, Zahrah said, "Does nobody of this time know history? Is the Quran unstudied?" More scholarly, she said, "Djinn have existed longer than humanity has, being formed by the One Above All out of fireless smoke. Some of us are now confined to lamps, bottles, rings, or other containers, and those who find and free us, become our masters."

Indicating Stephanie, Zahrah said, "My mistress Stephanie called me, and this one is now her slave until she makes her three wishes."

Wincing a little when Zahrah uses the word "slave", Stephanie continues.  "I know this is hard to believe...I didn't before I met Zahrah.  But, I've come to understand her and things in general a lot more in the last week than I ever thought I would.  Zahrah is a djinn...a genie.  But don't think of the old show as she doesn't magically grant wishes, but she has abilities and powers, a need to serve, and a look on life that isn't ours."  She looks over at Zahrah for second and smiles weakly.

She addresses Zahrah, "I'm not Muslim. I was raised in the Catholic and Shinto faiths and have no personal familiarity with the Quran or Islamic faith."

She asks, "So if the genie in Aladdin was in the lamp for 10,000 years, how long was Zarah in her lamp or bottle or whatever she is tied to?"

It was no surprise Stephanie had been far more helpful in her answer- Zahrah still assumed situations and knowledge that were not extant in this time and place, so did not always give an adequate explanation.

Shaking her head, she corrected, "That is not so. While a bound djinn could live that long, it is almost unheard of for a djinn to be older than three thousand. The One Above All granted Sulaimān al-Ḥakīm, whom you as a Christian call King Solomon, son of King David, dominion over the djinn. Many of my kind served him them, those ones living and dying just as you of earth and water do, but many of us he bound to totems, no longer to age, only to serve, until judgment comes to us." She did not mention later sorcerers and their attempts at binding djinn, since it did not seem relevant- that would be more recent, not less.

"For this one, it has been about one hundred years since I was last free," she added.

"Well...first, I'm glad you believe me.  Second, I need you to understand that she is powerful and there are those that are seeking her.  I don't know who...or how...or why...but they had set a 'trap' to get her attention.  They were not adept at what they were doing, but I imagine they will try again.  As she is tied to her bottle, I need you to protect her if I cannot.  She is tied to me currently and would work for the next master of the bottle, but I know it cannot be those that seek her."

Zahrah knew the folktale of علاء الدين, and the version by Galland, but did not know of Disney or his version. Still, she imagined the story would not be much different. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to try to find it though, since this Disney at least must have still heard of djinn.

She briefly twitched an eye when her mistress said that she needed someone to protect Zahrah. It seemed that Stephanie still did not understand who among them actually needed the protection. But she was loathe to disagree with her mistress in private, and was certainly not going to do so with another present, so she remained silent.

When addressed by Rei, Zahrah responded, "This one will obey her master with all her ability, as has been ordained. What you might deem unethical is from a human viewpoint that matters not to the djinn, nor would she fail to serve over a personal objection." She paused, then added, "The charge to serve derives its power from the source of all morality. To disobey would be the greater sin." As was her wont, it was not the whole story or completely accurate, but it was not untrue either.

After a moment she perks up and raises her head smiling.

She looks to Stephanie and says, "Maybe we need to look at this like contract law."

She asks Zahrah, "You are bound not unlike a legal contract? What are all the governing laws of your servitude, what are the stipulations for you to become unbound from your current master, and how would your next master be determined?"

Stephanie lists to what is being said and hears the familiar ground that she has been walking in her head.  "I need to clarify something.  Zahrah is powerful.  But the need to serve and the link to the bottle are things that can be exploited for evil.  She is different that us...more in some ways and less in others.  I do not mean that as insult, but a reality.  Like the frog and scorpion, they both have their nature.  They are what they are."  She looks at Zahrah.

Zahrah did not object to Rei's characterization of zealotry, since a random human's opinion of her was not important. Neither did she completely understanding how it was applicable. She came from an earlier time when people lived with of greater faith, and she was personally living the effects of events related that for most, were stories of millennia ago. So her starting point and Rei's, indeed, with most humans, would be world's apart.

But it was not uncommon for djinn to be tricksters, so seeing Rei's body language of frustration, she could not help but respond, "This saying is hard, and who can hear it?"

She nodded at Stephanie's words. It seemed her mistress had paid more attention than she had given her credit for.

To Rei’s question, she repeated quizzically, "Legal contract?", parsing the phrase over in her head, then deciding to ignore it. It was similar, yet different, but contrasting and comparing the two did not seem interesting to her. Instead, she moved to the next question. "Command of the jinn was given to Sulaimān, and we are slaves to the one who releases us from our totem object. That is the governing law- to serve. There are no restrictions on what that service might be, save for the limits of our own capabilities. If Mistress Stephanie wished for a palace, this one, as a bottle djinn, cannot create it out of the air as a mighty ifrit of a lamp might do. She would have to build it herself, have another do so, or acquire one from another, or use other means to fulfill the wish. But if it was her wish, then Mistress Stephanie would have a palace,” she stated emphatically, looking at Stephanie directly as she did so.

Turning back to Rei, she continued, “Jinn become unbound to our current master when three wishes have been granted.” There was more, but she elected not to say. This was both because she was under no compulsion to do so, but also because she considered silence a protective thing for Stephanie, whom she had some fondness for. “This one’s next master would be determined as all masters are determined. She will serve the one who possesses and releases her from her bottle,” she finished, slightly undermining her previous omission.

You aren't as powerful as the most powerful djinn, but if someone really imaginative and patient became your master, they could do real and lasting damage."

She asks, "What are your services to your master or mistress beyond the granting of three wishes? What are the limits to your service beyond the three wishes? What are your own capabilities?"

Zahrah smiled, amused, as Rei described the security of the room. They were talking about two entirely different things.

She neither affirmed nor denied Rei's statements, but she did answer the questions posed. "This one serves as commanded. What those services will be is the purview of her mistress to decide without this one limiting her." She intentionally left out an important point that she had informed Stephanie of, unsure if it was better to bring it up or not, but deciding if it was, Stephanie could do so.

She was a bit perplexed by Rei's question of capabilities, as it was very open-ended, but she tried to give at least some suitable answer. "This one can perform any of the tasks one might ask of their female household servants. She is also a skilled entertainer, pleasing to the eye and ear."

Shifting into her half-smoke form, she added, "Further, she is capable of fulfilling tasks that one might need a being made of fireless smoke to perform." She did not elaborate on what those tasks might be, but she had no doubt this woman could think of several.

She blinked herself from behind Stephanie to behind Rei. "And while this one cannot move an entire palace, she can send over a dozen camels nearly one hundred al-mīl away with ease."

Zahrah was quoting the Bible (John 6:60) with her question, which she thought Rei would realize since Rei said she had been raised Catholic. But again, she and Rei are coming from different perspectives, so Zahrah's attempted chaffing fell flat. *L*

She brings up Google on her tablet to convert the near inevitable answer to metric and asks Zahrah, "How far can you be from your bottle?"

She then asks Stephanie, "Would you be willing to inform someone else of Zahrah's existence? He's a former hero here in Chicago that operated years ago and is working to create a super team. Sentinel. He has greater resources than I do, and extensive connections. He would be able to create a secure vault or perhaps several that would allow you to store Zahrah's bottle securely. He might even know someone that could handle the more esoteric issues I am sure need to be addressed."

The length of a parasang, unfortunately, can vary wildly. Persians had two different measurements for it, Greeks had others, Babylonians had a different one, Arabs still more, and still others used different amounts as well, which would lead to imprecision. Zahrah is also giving an estimate rather than an exact distance, so that would also account for differences.

Zahrah is also using a different amount for a parasang now than she did when Stephanie asked her the same question. She told Stephanie her range was 2 1/2 parasangs, but just told Rei now it is 4 parasangs. Both are true enough, depending on which parasang you use for measurement, but definitely not helpful on her part.

However, there is a discrepancy. Stephanie thought it was a 3.5 mile amount, but Zarah responded that it was 'a little more than about twice the distance you suggest'. If so, that would indicate a 21 mile range, unlike the dozen she said here. Zahrah misunderstood Stephanie's question at the time, which is where that discrepancy arose, but that brings up another. ^_^;

He is also who is helping me investigate the attempted robbery and looking into a Nazi scientist named Dr. Brikner who seems to be a common thread in a series of thefts involving artifacts of the Third Reich having been stolen from all over the world."

"I can arrange a meeting between the two of you without mentioning Zahrah under the pretense of our investigation. You can decide whether or not you trust him afterward and if you want to let him know about Zahrah."

"As for a vault to store Zahrah's bottle, think of it like a bank safety deposit box, but I think a series of such small vaults around the city would be good. If you move around, you can relocate the bottle as needed."

What Stephanie decided to do was her prerogative as mistress of the bottle, so Zahrah continued to remain silent. However, she privately agreed that the less people who knew the better- not for herself, but for Stephanie. Just as jinn had their nature, so did humans, and greed was certainly a part of that nature from what she had seen.

Stephanie wrinkles her brow and bites her lip, and nods.  When you talk of the Nazi, she perks up.  "Let me think about your ideas.  But the Nazi investigation is my second discussion point.  We found some items.  We found compartments in some of the desk items.  Here are the details I have collected.  There is nothing in any of the compartments that we found."

She pulls our of her big purse a folder and slides it across the table. Inside are pictures, measurements, descriptions on the item and their state, how they were opened and found, and how they link to Brikner.  There are also details on where they were in the collection and printed data sheets from some 'artifact archival system' (mostly detailing earlier descriptions and item travel history).  "We only found these after a thorough search."

The doctor looks concerned and off in thought...a little, "I will...on both items.  But that does make me wonder a little more deeply about a few security guards from the other night that seemed to not be our usual team.  There were three, they seemed to know where they were going and not on patrol...like I usually run into them doing.  I don't remember what they said....  Zahrah...you remember any of what they said?  I had thought it odd that night, but forgot about it until now.  There have been a lot of other things going on."

Exactness mattered to Zahrah only at times, and only with a few subjects, such as wishes. This was not one of those subjects or times, so she did not bother to remember the exact wording. That left her to silently agree with Stephanie on this matter.

Neither did she respond to the question of video, as it clearly was not directed to her. A reasonable thing, since while she could understand the meaning of the word, it itself was meaningless to her.

As much as she did not like to counter her mistress, Zarah also did not want her to look like a failure. So she spoke up, albeit reluctantly. "Mistress, if you do not trust Eric, the head of security guards, or the security guards themselves, then the security video would perhaps also not be an artifact to trust. Therefore, would arranging a meeting with whomever has the security video and informing them you wish to see it be the best way to achieve you desires?"

Perhaps it was and Stephanie had accounted for this- Zahrah still did not fully understand the video concept except in theory, and did not understand all of what it covered or what could be done with or to it. She was simply working off the word 'security' being untrustworthy.

As before, Zarah took nothing to eat or drink, and simply stood obediently behind Stephanie as the conversation went on. The dual life question was not altogether foreign to her- Stephanie had her pretending to be a graduate student when encountering others in the museum, and previous masters had her pose as a girlfriend, lover, concubine, or assistant of some kind. She understood the wisdom of this in her case, but did not understand the necessity for why a human might do so. They did not change ownership in such a manner. So, she listened on as Mindstrike gave her response, even though she said she did not have such a dual life.

I never would have been able to find them or get to them. Knight Wolf was there, and he saved all but one of them that had already passed from the smoke, I suppose. I was some help, but not much, and if Knight Wolf hadn't been there, none of those people would have survived."

The doctor looks up at you from the examination table (or tea table...depends upon need), and points to 5" x 5" box.  "This was found at Navy Pier.  Near the ferris wheel.  I like to keep that area monitored and this appeared without being seen by my cameras or CCT.  It appears to be a sensor/battery.  It was siphoning power from the wheel machinery (nothing too significant) to storage and monitoring the area, but no idea why or who yet.  We broke into its storage (encrypted, but nothing to spectacular...a grad student could have brute forced it in a week or two) and found the data.  Weather...power levels...a few raw numbers we think are a calculation of head count...some dates.  Shadow disabled it in the field and damaged the main processor.  The shielded it during transport and we made sure all of the power sources and antenna are were disconnected.  None of the parts used are that special...high-end over the counter parts...but for the siphon and batter.  The batter is very advanced and could hold high amounts of energy.  Shade is looking through footage there and in other places to see if she can find anything else."

I do think it needs to be looked into considering the obvious conspiracy. Infiltrating security would be the best option to walk away with anything quietly."

He walks over to a drawer and pulls out a small black box.  "I don't have any cameras in the museum; outside yes, inside no.  We could place one of the temp cameras for a week.  They last about and week and self-destruct prior to power hitting zero.  No sound on these...."  He hands you a small black box (2 x 3.5 x 3) with a small bubble on one side and stickem on the other.

He seems to look up from the table and look at the two of you, "I can get in.  The system, as long as it is OTC, should be easy.  I would recommend that we do maybe three of the disposable cameras; one outside the security office, one the security desk that monitors the cameras, and one outside the employee entrance.  We'll be able to get all staff and then do more research that way.  I have to guess that the bulk of their team is 'renta-cop', so this shouldn't be hard. "

He stands up a little straighter and looks at you.  "As to Dr. Brown, I recommend a simple test.  See how open she is to giving more details about her finds, the museum and about herself.  Being transparent and showing/being concerned can help with decision making.  Especially the questions about herself...this could shake a person that is trying to lie.  Having to be 'thorough and cover all the bases' tends to explain away questions to those that are not hiding something.  It is critical you observe her while questioning.  And if that doesn't work, I know how to waterboard people."  His voice has an amused lilt when he says the last portion.

"I've made very little progress on my 'lab' lately.  It is just a matter of free time.  I did reach out to see if I could find any information about Paragon and the answer has been universally that he is missing and nobody has a clue.  CPD...ATCPE...no mention on blogs...I cannot even guess what happened, but when somebody active disappears...it is not generally self-imposed.  Lastly, we've experienced some odd black outs and brown outs here.  Not sure where it is coming from yet."

"The brown outs and black outs have been here.  None last long...they do seem to be hitting the area.  The hotels...the stores up on Wacker and at the Hyatt.  We first were worried about the energy wasps, but it does not seem to last long.  The drain has be inconsistent.  Just does not seem to fit.  I have found that ComEd is checking on it, but they have not made any progress in weeks."
